Phonics Policy

All phonics in EYFS and Y1 is taught using Jolly Phonics, the highly successful, multi-sensory, synthetic approach to early reading. We employ all aspects of the Jolly Phonics programme including the songs, actions, characters and images to ensure our children get the full benefit of the Jolly Phonics programme and do not become confused by different approaches. From Year 2, phonics provision becomes specific to those children who still need it and the focus for most children moves on to spelling rules and strategies as per the school spelling strategy, which follows the Westover Green spelling programme. Throughout EYFS and KS1 phonics or spelling is taught in daily discrete sessions. All classroom environments have an age-appropriate display concentrating on both sounds, key words or spelling rules as appropriate and incorporate Jolly Phonics resources to support children’s learning.
