African Drumming Workshop

30 KS2 children enjoyed an hour long African Drumming workshop last half term, delivered by Dorset Music Service. The children chosen were given the opportunity to learn about the popular African djembe drum: how to play it; the different timbres of sound and its significance within African culture. The children enjoyed learning some traditional African rhythmic patterns. All the players learned a selection of rhythmic patterns which they rehearsed aurally and with words to help them memorise the rhythms. They first played the rhythms in unison and then layered them on top of each other to create a polyrhythmic texture.
